Great care but sometimes have to wait for an appointment slot. Online booking and prescription service is excellent.

I have read many letters regarding the service the NHS offer and problems associated with Great Western Hospital (which I have never previously needed the services of). I’d like to add my own. I recently noticed that my right leg was swollen, red and tender. At 8:30am on Thursday last week, while at work in Malmesbury, I contacted Beversbrook surgery in to request an appointment. I was directed to a self-diagnosis help site, which when I entered my symptoms advised me that I could be suffering from deep vein thrombosis and advised that I should immediately arrange for some else to drive me to A&E. This was scary. Unable to arrange this, I drove myself to the surgery in Calne where I was given an appointment in 90 minutes time. My regular doctor advised that the problem could indeed be DVT, and phoned GWH to make an appointment for me to have an ultrascan. At 1:15pm I received a call from Neil at GWH saying that I should arrive for a 3:15pm appointment. I arrived early at 2:30pm and by 2:50pm, 25 minutes early than my appointment time, I was undergoing the scan, which I was told there and then did not indicate DVT. I then went to the Ambuology department to discuss this, where I joined five other people undergoing assessment. I waited for around 40 minutes, during which my contact details where updated and my blood pressure, heart rate and temperature were checked, before I was assessed by a medic. An alternative cause for the symptoms was advised for discussion with my GP, and I returned to my car at 3:50pm. Between 8:30am and 4:00pm I had been self-diagnosed in Malmesbury, had a face-to-face assessment with my doctor in Calne, undergone an ultrascan in Swindon, and was leaving the hospital for home, reassured and with a new course of investigation mapped out. This service is incredible! Thank you to all involved.

I have to have regular nurse appointments for blood tests and appointment times are nearly always met. My latest INR blood test was slightly out of range - I check the results on-line. It showed the result as satisfactory but I rang the clinic as I knew it wasn't quite right. I was advised that the test should be re-done in 2 weeks which makes good sense to me but I could see no reference on the on-line result to either contact the clinic or to have another test in 2 weeks. Please see this as constructive criticism, I am very familiar with how and why INR results can fluctuate but others might not. All in all, I have every confidence in the Practice and everyone who works there - thanks.

Response from Beversbrook Medical Centre

Thanks for your feedback - which is really helpful. We were not aware of this problem so thanks so much for highlighting it. We do have a safety netting procedure to make sure that our INR patients are well managed in Practice but you have now brought to our attention something which we can now improve on. I am very grateful for you in raising this and also for your kind words regarding the Beversbrook team. Your feedback is invaluable - thanks once again! - Mrs Emmy Butcher, Managing Partner - emmybutcher@nhs.net

Came for a confirmation appointment of pregnancy, specifically asked for a test to be done when booking the appointment and was promised this but then had to argue with the Dr for one to be done. Was told to then contact the Chippenham birthing centre to which the number wouldn’t dial/connect and took over an hour to get through. Also told to collect a pregnancy pack from reception and there was none in stock. For a first pregnancy this was really stressful & not expected for the start of an exciting journey.

Response from Beversbrook Medical Centre

Hello there, thanks for your feedback and I am really sorry to hear that you have experienced these issues at such an exciting time. I think we certainly could have done better here and agree that it is disappointing that there were not Pregnancy Packs available in Reception. I have asked my team to look into this stock issue and thank you for bringing it to our attention. The pregnancy tests we keep in clinic are supplied to us by Public Health for use with our No Worries patients only. This is because pregnancy tests are readily available over the counter at your local pharmacy and tests can be done from the comfort of your own home, without the need for a GP appointment. Home testing is usually pretty accurate so if you have had a positive pregnancy test then you can self-refer to the Midwifery Team at Chippenham Birthing Centre, who then inform us of your pregnancy and plans for on-going care. I am sorry that you had trouble reaching them and I am sure that the RUH PALS department would equally be grateful for your feedback regarding this issue so that they can prevent other patients from the same experience. They can be contacted through 01225 825656. I would very much like to hear from you further to review your concerns and to look at ways we can help to improve your experience of our service in the meantime and can be contacted via e-mail in the first instance at emmybutcher@nhs.net. I look forward to hearing from you. Kindest regards, Emmy Butcher, Managing Partner
